In order to solve a lead pulling problem, it is important to understand why your dog pulls, or learnt to pull, in the first place, you can’t solve something you don’t understand!

Many owners with dogs that pull on the lead believe their dog to be ‘dominant’ or ‘rude’ or ‘naughty’ but you may be surprised at the reason why your dog pulls?

1. Because no-one has explained to them that it’s not ok to do so! (In a way they understand) It has nothing to do with dominance, or pack leadership,
(there are many submissive dogs that pull like steam trains) it is simply because, as far as the dog is concerned, PULLING ON THE LEAD WORKS!  From your dogs point of view, we humans walk sooooo slowly!! Pulling makes us walk faster! Dogs do things that work for them, your dog has learnt that pulling on the lead works for him, and until you teach him that it will no longer work for him, EVER, he won’t stop.

2. Dogs have what is known as an Instinctive Opposition Reflex.  That means, whenever they feel pressure against their bodies, in this case their necks and chests,
they AUTOMATICALLY respond by leaning against it, this behaviour is a reflex action and is self rewarding.

3. Excessive Excitement.  When dogs become excessively excited it can be very difficult for them to demonstrate impulse control (CALM DOWN).
Pulling on the lead is a stress inducing behaviour in itself, so if you start off with an over excited dog, then allow him to pull on the lead, you have little chance of achieving any successful training with him in this state.

4. Fear / Anxiety.  If a dog feels anxious about anything associated with going out for a walk, it can manifest itself in lead pulling behaviour.  This could be anxiety associated with traffic, seeing other dogs, meeting strangers, harsh handling whilst being walked (i.e. yanking on the lead) or any number of other experiences.

5. Stress. Stress produces chemicals in the dog’s brain that inhibit his pain sensitivity and
make him pull harder.  Dogs do not have the mental ability to work out that the unpleasant feeling of the collar tightening around its throat is because they are pulling, they do not understand that if they stopped pulling, the unpleasant feelings would go away.

Curing a dog that has developed lead pulling behaviour is a simple process, but not easy to do?  There are two basic aspects that you must adopt in order to succeed:

PERSISTENCE  &  CONSISTENCY

The quickest, most effective way to stop a dog from pulling on the lead is for your behaviour to be consistent.  j0386158.jpgMany owners start trying to correct the behaviour, but usually give up quite quickly, resulting in the dog 'learning' that pulling is acceptable, even if maybe after a little while.  By realising that a certain thing happens at a certain time ALL THE TIME, EVERY TIME, a dog will learn very quickly what gets him the things he wants and what gets him nothing.

If at any time you are inconsistent, even just once, that one time will be enough to keep the dog ‘testing’ the behaviour to see if it might work again.  In fact it strengthens the likelihood that your dog will continue to pull, because it worked once, in your dog’s mind, it might work again.

Many dogs that have established the behaviour of pulling on the lead are excessively excitable before they even get outside.  When you get the lead out to go for a walk they spin around and bounce about, whine, bark and generally go nuts!! Is this your dog?

It is important to get this behaviour under control before you can begin to teach your dog to walk nicely on the lead.  Use the following steps to establish calm behaviour at home when getting ready to go for a walk.
•    Desensitize your dog to ALL aspects of getting ready to go for a walk; this in itself will help stop your dog from pulling on the lead because stress accumulates from the moment your dog starts to get over excited.
•    Your behaviour must indicate that nothing proceeds unless your dog exhibits calm behaviour
•    Praise & reward your dog for all NON-EXCITABLE BEHAVIOUR.  Ignore everything else (ignoring means no speaking, touching or looking at your dog)
•    There is no need to keep telling your dog what you want him to do.  Let the praise/clicker/treats do the talking.(If you are not using/familiar with clicker training use a reward mark word/treat)
•    When we continually shout orders at our dog like ‘get off’ ‘get down’ ‘quiet’ ‘ stop it’ ‘sit’ etc. It stresses them out and winds them up even more.  By not doing this you give him the opportunity to work things out for himself.  When I do X - Y happens, this strengthens the learning process
•    Do not wind your dog up by saying things like ‘walkies!’ or ‘Wanna go Walkies!’
